SUGGESTION FOR MOTIVATING YOUR CHILDREN AND HELPING THEM TO IMPROVE READING SKILLS AT HOME:
1. Make reading a pleasant time. Never use reading a punishment.
2. Join you child for reading time every day.
3. Read to them – choose books that are more difficult then those they can read independently.
4. Use audio books. These can be purchased at bookstores or borrowed at the public library.
5. Get your child a library card and visit the public library on a regular basis. Bring them to summer library at school during the summer months.
6. Before reading: Talk with your child about the title and illustrations. Have him or her predict what they think the story will be about.
While reading: Stop occasionally and ask questions about each page (or even paragraph if needed).
After reading: Ask a few more question like: What was your favorite part? Will you retell the story to your (brother, sister, dog, cat, dog, etc.) While I fold clothes? Would you like to read another book by the same author?
